Nigerian Mosque

Masjid em Kano

"Examines the basic beliefs of Islam and Islam's history from its origin in Saudi Arabia and its historical expansion to the present day. Includes information about the ritual pilgrimage or Hajj, Islamic law, and the role of Islam and Muslims in the modern world. Also includes information about the Sufis. Features the theologian Hans Küng who gives his views on what this history means and what the future should look like."

From the series:

"Interest in Islam, as well as a concern with Islamic fundamentalism, have gone hand-in-hand in the West, with fear winning out over fascination whenever a crisis has focused attention on the religion. But as Islam spreads, it is becoming more and more important to develop an understanding that will allow Muslims and non-Muslims to live harmoniously in proximity to each other. In this program, Hans Küng goes to the heart of the matter as he maps out the history of Islam, from its origin to the present day."

Terms / Concepts

  • Ramadan

    • "Ramadan is the ninth month of the Muslim calendar. It is during this month that Muslims observe the Fast of Ramadan. Lasting for the entire month, Muslims fast during the daylight hours and in the evening eat small meals and visit with friends and family. It is a time of worship and contemplation. A time to strengthen family and community ties."
