- Paul Buffalo was first named Nah-gah-nab ("[One Who is] Sitting-Down-Ahead"). As a child Paul was cured from a serious illness by an elder medicine doctor, who gave Paul his own name, Gah-bay-bi-nayss ("Forever-Flying-Bird"), and, with that name came part of the elder medicine doctor's soul and the ability to live to be an elder. Paul was proud of his namesake Gah-bay-bi-nayss, a highly respected doctor, leader, and spokesperson of his people. That's the name Paul went by during his early years. Later on, after his mother remarried to Jim Buffalo, Paul took on the name "Paul Buffalo."
The years he was calles Gah-bay-bi-nayss were special to Paul Buffalo, and he remembers them fondly.
- Paul is a direct descendent of the great leader and spokesperson Pezeke, one of the great Anishinabe leaders of the Lake Superior Region.
