Solidago altissima

seitaka-awadachi-sou, or the "tall foam-whipping plant"

Solidago altissima is an alien invader in Japan. The genotypes that have successfully colonized Japan's countryside have a distinctive morphology and phenology when compared to US genotypes.   Takayuki Ohgushi's lab group (lead student Y. Ando) in conjunction with the Craig Lab group (notably J. Strange) collected seeds and rhizomes on a latitudinal gradient and created reciprocal transplant gardens in Japan and the U.S.
