Spittlebugs on Willows ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------- --return

Craig, T. P. and T. Ohgushi. 2002.  Preference and performance in the spittlebug, Aphrophora pectoralis on four species of willow. ECOLOGICAL ENTOMOLOGY 27:529-540

Dr. Takayuki Ohgushi examines Aphoraphora pectoralis on Salix sachalinenesis.

Craig and Ohgushi found a strong preference oviposition on rapidly growing shoots and offspring performance was higher on rapidly growing shoots within willow species. But a different pattern emerged with looking across the four willow species range attacked by the spittlebugs. Adults mating site differs from oviposition site and larvae migrate from oviposition site leaving an overall pattern of oviposition prefrence among willow species is not correlated with performance.
