Dr. Burns teaches undergraduate and graduate courses in microelectronics processing and analog electronic circuit design. Professor Burns has twice received the National (IEEE) Outstanding Advisor Award for his work with the Iowa State University (ISU) IEEE student branch and in 1992 received the College of Engineering Superior Engineering Teacher Award.
Dr. Burns specializes in microelectronics processing and analog circuit design. A major portion of his research is in the design and realization of a new class of amorphous and microcrystalline silicon thin film transistor-based ULSI circuits fabricated directly on flexible substrates. His research interests also include exploiting the piezoelectric properties of thin-film aluminum nitride for high-frequency systems and chemical sensors. More recently, he is the Principal Investigator for the UMD Northland Advanced Transportation Systems Research Laboratories. His research is in specialized sensors and instrumentation. He is co-author of Principles of Electronic Circuits, a widely-adopted junior-level electronics textbook, now in its second edition.
