what about the bus
Ben Iverson
If you're
starting your first year at UMD you may have realized that parking passes cost
so much you might as well buy one and set up camp in it, because you won't have
any money left to pay for a dorm. Speaking as a kid who was born with a plastic
spoon in his mouth, if I spent that much money on a parking pass I would have to
eat it. So the best option is the magical world of the Duluth Public Transit
System.
The information office on the main level has big maps and
little maps for anyone who needs to find out the routes. The bus is free for
anyone with a student ID, your own or otherwise, and is very well kept. There's
two or three bus stops on the campus and they're easy to find. The buses are
usually on time so you won't have to sacrifice a limb to frostbite, whiners.
And, they go pretty much anywhere.
There are a
few dozen different bus routes so you don't have to spend an hour on the bus
just to get across town. So as long as you know how to read a bus schedule,
don't worry rich kids it's not that hard, you should be on your way in no time.

Question: What is one thing that you would do differently in your first year at UMD if you had to do it all over again.
I would likely concentrate on the academic aspects of UMD rather than the social. I have found that going to social events is fun and is necessary at times but it is not rewarding. Now that I have nearly completed a semester at UMD I have found out how much work is really involved in succeeding at college. It is evident how crucial it is to attend class and read the material even though it isn't required. I would however work on making friends within your dorm building. I have found that you spend a lot of time in your dorm and it makes it a lot more comfortable to know who is around you and also gives you opportunities to find help when you need it.

Racism is one of the world's major issue today. Many people are not aware of how much racism still exists in our schools, workforces, and anywhere else where social lives are occurring. It is obvious that racism is as bad as it was many decades ago, but it sure has not gone away. Many people believe that today racism is not a very big issue, especially in schools. This is a fact proven to be wrong several times. Racism is an issue that should never be avoided, especially when it deals with children. When families immigrate to the U.S. they hope to fit in with the rest of the country, but they get discriminated. "Racism is a human problem and a crime that is absolutely so ghastly that a person who is fighting against racism well within his right to fight against it by any means necessary until it's eliminated" ( Malcolm X.). when you walk down the hallways, how people look at you just because they are not used your way of living and your style of living. I would advise the new comers to the great UMD to watch who they let into their lives.
