Student guests, Taylor and Corey, shared their impressions from a three-day workshop they recently attended in Indiana focused on student involvement in assessment practice. They participated in focus group training and worked with Shannon to determine possible ways to get students more aware/involved in assessment practices on campus. They indicated student involvement in assessment would give them a voice in their own education and equip them with knowledge to help them make decisions about their time at UMD. One possible idea for a focus group project at UMD included gathering student input on their experiences with each of the SLOs (e.g. Life skills).
Shannon explained there would not be a Program Assessment Liaison for liberal education this year--Dana resigned from the position and there was no clear path for deciding who should be the LE-PAL. John indicated that he, too, would be resigning his position as CLA representative on CASL following a recommendation by his Department Head. Shannon will contact Olaf Kuhlke to identify a new CLA representative.
The remainder of the discussion centered around preparation for the Assessment Peer Review scheduled on 16 November with members providing feedback on the groups, resources available, and agenda for the day.
Meeting adjourned: 10:25
