The UMD Council for Advancement of Student Learning (CASL) was convened by the Director of Student Learning Assessment and reports to the Associate Vice Chancellor of Undergraduate Education. CASL members werefaculty and staff from academic and functional units dedicated to advancing student learning through activities and experiences informed by assessment results.  Specifically, CASL:

  • Advised on the continuous development of the UMD assessment process.
  • Discussed, recommended and planned professional development opportunities to positively affect student learning through assessment activities.
  • Served as a resource and communicate student learning assessment activities across campus.
  • Acted as an assessment coach to people who are actively involved in assessment in academic and co-curricular units, connect them with resources that are available for assessment, and help units maximize the use of shared tools and resources.
  • Participated and facilitated interdisciplinary groups to review student learning assessment reports, data and activities.
  • Reviewed and recommended initial, continuing, or permanent funding for current and proposed assessment activities.
  • Communicated regularly with EPC, the Associate Vice Chancellor for Student Life, and campus as a whole.

CASL members saw the value of continuous improvement of student learning through inquiry and assessment.  Members worked in the spirit of collaborating with other faculty and staff to assist each other in achievement of UMD’s mission and goals for a learning-centered environment.
