Fall 2016 - Welcome UMD Parents and Families!

Dear Parents and Families

My name is Lisa Rigoni, I serve as the Director for the Office of Students in Transition (SIT) and I want to take the opportunity to congratulate your student on being admitted to UMD. This is the first step to becoming a bulldog!

All of us in SIT are excited that you and your student are considering joining the UMD family. Choosing a college that fits both personally and academically is not always an easy process or decision for a student and family to make. This is why we will be honored if your student chooses to join our community. Being accepted to a college, especially UMD, is a big deal. Like you, we are very proud of your student’s accomplishment and we hope to see you both on campus very soon.

As parents or family members, your role is essential in your student's transition into college, whether it is their first time or not. That is why we hope you will review the following, so you are familiar with UMD's lingo and processes and understand the specifics of what we are asking your student to complete if, or when, they choose to take the next steps to become a member of the UMD Bulldog pack.

Gold envelopes: contain the official Invitation to Register for an A&R session and will be sent to the address provided on the Admissions Application. Invitations will begin going out weekly to students who are starting UMD in the fall semester beginning in December and will contain instructions on how to sign up for their session.

Advisement & Registration (A&R): A program designed to provide your student with the necessary information to register for their first semester of UMD classes. This is also when they can pickup their UCard. This is the next step to making their UMD college journey a reality.

A&R session dates: dates will vary based on the academic unit your student is enrolled in. In fact, the only dates a student will see when they login to VZO are open dates for their collegiate unit. If they want to change their college before they arrive to register, it is important that they contact our office so we can assist them properly-218-726-6393.

A&R $80 non-refundable fee: this fee is what locks in your students orientation date and let's UMD know that your student plans to attend UMD. Once an A&R date is chosen and the fee is paid, an email confirmation will be sent to their UMD email account. If your student registers for a date but does not pay the fee, they could lose their spot for that day.

What does this fee pay for? this $80 fee goes towards all expenses for our Orientation Programs (A&R, Winter Welcome, Bulldog Welcome Week) our Transfer Services and the Transfer P2P Mentoring program.

Proxy Appointments: these appointments are reserved for very special circumstances (military, health issue, rare opportunity) ONLY and are usually conducted over the phone. We in SIT, along with the collegiate units, strongly encourage all students, whether a first time college student or transfer student, to attend an in-person Advisement & Registration session, so they do not miss out on the full experience of their first UMD course registration.

What to Bring to A&R: students must bring their UMD internet ID and password, a driver’s license (for UCard) and a laptop or tablet for registration (if they have one).

General Schedule of the A&R day: please go to: Fall 2016 Advisement & Registration to view the schedule.

Parent and Family Program: this program is presented by our awesome Division for Student Life. The program provides parents and families information about UMD. Some topics that may be discussed are housing, registration, health services, career services and student transition issues and solutions. You will begin the A&R program with your student to hear an overview of the day, a student success discussion and the college welcome, then your student will be escorted to their college to begin the registration process and parents and families are encouraged to attend the Parent Program.

Fostering Autonomy: for parents and families of a new to college incoming student, we understand that this can be a scary step, but it is important that students register for classes on their own with the guidance of their advisors, and that they start making their own choices about their academic futures.

Developing confidence and improving problem-solving and communication skills all contribute in fostering autonomy within your student.

Bulldog Welcome Week (BWW): August 23 – 27, 2016. Move in Day: August 23, 2016. BWW is required for all new first-year college students (including those coming in with PSEO or College in the Schools credit). More information will be sent to your student mid-summer once they have completed an A&R session.

Please plan vacations, work schedules, and other activities so your student will be available on August 23rd.

Transfer Student Orientation: Transfer students are also required to attend an orientation program. Students can opt-in to participate in the entire Bulldog Welcome Week program or attend the Transfer Bulldog Welcome. More information will be sent to your student mid-summer once they have completed an A&R session.

Please help us: remind your student to

  • sign up and pay for an A&R date ASAP
  • complete the requested tasks before arriving at A&R
  • bring the required items to A&R
  • check UMD email frequently for any updates
  • participate in either Bulldog Welcome Week (BWW) or Transfer Bulldog Welcome.

Lastly, on behalf of the staff in the Office for Students in Transition, we look forward to meeting your student during A&R and assisting them throughout their college journey. Go Bulldogs!
