The right tools for the job — the School of Fine Arts takes pride in having top-quality equipment and technology for use in the classroom as well as for research, artistic projects and performances.
For uninterrupted connectivity, authenticated wireless networking is available throughout most of the UMD main campus, including the residence halls. Wireless access on campus is available to all students, faculty and staff through sign-in with a University Internet ID and password.
Facilities in the Department of Art and Design are equipped to meet the needs of students completing their degree requirements. Studios in drawing, painting, printmaking, sculpture, photography and ceramics offer an array of equipment and furnishings to provide comprehensive instruction in these discipline areas. Photography is offered in a newly renovated studio designed for digital, darkroom and alternative processes photography projects. State-of-the-art archival and proofing printers provide for excellent representation of students' photo work in printed format. Also recently renovated are the drawing studio, the art history lecture classroom and the ceramics area. Ceramics offers instruction in hand building and wheel throwing techniques and houses a newly renovated kiln facility. A graphic design seminar room with plasma screen is available for critiques and other group activities. Students also have access to a woodshop and a matting and presentation preparation lab for professional presentation of their work.
Though most Art & Design students use their own laptop computers for daily work, they also have access to 120 Macintosh computers in labs across campus, each of which is equipped with the latest graphic design software and is connected to high-quality color printers, scanners and CD/DVD burners. This campus map shows current computer availability and hours of operation for all student computer labs on campus. The laptop requirement for Art & Design students can be found here.
The Department of Music features an outstanding concert venue, the Weber Music Hall, that functions both as a laboratory for student musicians and ensembles and as a performance destination for internationally acclaimed artists. Wired for the latest in technology, the hall is a resource for professionals seeking a quality recording location. The adjoining Singer Rehearsal Hall supplies the students with a superb preparation space.
Department of Theatre classes and productions take place in the Marshall Performing Arts Center (MPAC), which includes a 715-seat flexible thrust/proscenium theater, a black-box experimental theater, fully-equipped scene, welding and costume shops, computerized lighting control, a digital and analogue recording studio and studio space for acting, dance and design. When the auditorium is not being used for department-sponsored activities, it is available to rent. All technical specifications are available through the Department of Theatre web site.
Digital Media Resources
UMD's Visualization and Digital Imaging Laboratory (Viz Lab) is open to faculty members and their research associates and to graduate students whose primary interest is in high-end visualization projects. The laboratory is a collaborative facility of the School of Fine Arts and the College of Science and Engineering. It provides a dynamic multi-media environment for design and scientific researchers to conduct original research in the areas of animation, visual imaging and scientific visualization. The laboratory integrates design research in the areas of computer graphics, two-dimensional imaging, three-dimensional imaging, virtual reality applications and sound/image control.
