Philemon and Baucis Scholarship Application

Award Amount: $750

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Undergraduate students at the University of Minnesota Duluth who have a declared major within the Swenson College of Science & Engineering
  • Progress toward success in achieving their declared major must be shown (no minimum GPA required)
  • Completed 30 credits at UMD

Deadline: March 11 - no applications accepted after that date

When are Funds Awarded: Recipients are notified in August via email.

Summary: To recognize Swenson College of Science & Engineering undergraduate students who are also expanding their world-view outside of the classroom learning experience.

The P & B scholarship is predicated on the Pay it Forward principal, by which the gratitude we feel toward those who helped us along the way is exercised by aiding the next generation. Preference is given to students who have demonstrated the Pay it Forward principal through committed efforts to help others. Evidence of this might include volunteer work through relief organizations, wilderness preservation and experiences, political activities, mentoring or leading youth groups, or supporting seniors.

Applicants must write a one-page typed essay. Suggested topics include, but are not limited to; experiences that have shaped or expand their world view, their understanding of a problem facing society, their experiences with the natural world, or comments in support of items in the previous paragraph. Incorporating how their field of study can be used to further the education and lives of others will strengthen the essay.

Students must have completed enough credits to be considered a sophomore or higher prior to the award. Applicants should show progress toward success in achieving their declared major. (No minimum G.P.A. required).
