YWCA 2013 Mother's Day Walk/Run
The Mother's Day Walk/Run began 29 years ago by Betty Brasgala. As an avid runner, she saw the need for a women-only event in Duluth to inspire women to "get off the sidelines". After three years, Betty chose to affiliate the race with the YWCA. We are proud of the history of the race and the spirit of volunteerism and community that it inspires. In celebration of this tradition, the 5K run is still for women only. In January 2005, Betty Brasgala was diagnosed with breast cancer. The race was renamed and will forever be known as "Betty's Race".
The fabulous 2 mile walk is all inclusive. All friends and family are invited to participate regardless of age or gender. We have a number of volunteer opportunities that include projects or assignments beginning now through the day of the event. We are able to accommodate many specific interests/needs; working indoor/outdoor only, stand/sitting only, lifting/no lifting, etc. All volunteers receive a Mother's Day Walk/Run t-shirt and the satisfaction of contributing to the Health & Wellness of women in our community!

Meals on Wheels Needs Drivers Urgently!
Meals on Wheels is in need of volunteer drivers! Be a part of this rewarding and important program of the Arrowhead Economic Opportunity Agency, which allows seniors to maintain independence and live in their own home. Volunteers deliver meals to a group of people once a week or on an on-call basis. The routes generally take about 1-1 1/2 hours once a week, in the late morning hours. The delivery of the meals also is an opportunity to provide a daily safety check for seniors who sometimes have little contact with others.
The greatest need at the present time is the Morgan Park/Gary routes for Tuesday, Thursday and Friday. The "job" is very rewarding as you really get to know the people you deliver meals to and they are so thankful for the service volunteers provide.
