Hired. Survey Reveals High Employment Rate for Recent Graduates

DULUTH, MN – An extensive survey of 1,944 alumni finds that nearly all 2013-14 grads have found jobs or are continuing their education.

The just-completed Career and Internship Services survey shows that 97% of the graduates surveyed are employed or are continuing their studies, up 2% from last year.

"This report affirms the value of a comprehensive university,” says Vice Chancellor Andrea Schokker. “UMD provides exactly the right mix of instruction, hands-on research, and internships that prepares our students for their next steps."

The survey also asks grads if their jobs are relevant to their majors. “The majority of respondents, 85% of those employed, reported their jobs as ‘related’ or ‘somewhat related’ to their majors,” says Julie Westlund, director of Career & Internship Services. “This is an increase over the previous year, which was 81%.”

Rachel Latuff, who received a degree in Art Education in 2013, is one of those grads. Now teaching at Northwoods School in Cook, Minn., she says that traveling abroad helped her back home. “I was able to teach at an International Baccalaureate school in Slovenia while I was getting my degree. This experience teaching, studying abroad, and volunteering helped set me apart from the other applicants for my current position.”

Staff from the office of Career and Internship Services surveyed alumni who received undergraduate degrees from UMD between July 1, 2013 and June 30, 2014. The report is based on responses from 1,755 graduates (90% of the reported 1,944 undergraduate students granted degrees during the time frame). The data was collected through online, email, and telephone surveys.
