LSBE Establishes Entrepreneurship Minor

DULUTH – The Labovitz School of Business and Economics at the University of Minnesota Duluth has established an Entrepreneurship Minor for students who are interested in starting and managing their own businesses. The Entrepreneurship Minor, which supplements a chosen LSBE major, is available for students to declare for the Fall 2015 semester.

Encompassing required upper-division credit classes based in entrepreneurship, finance, and business law, with an additional elective in management or marketing, the new minor will provide students with a foundation of the basic requirements of starting a business.

“Focusing on the economic vitality of our local area, the state of Minnesota, and with far-reaching implications even globally, LSBE is playing a large role of educating students to lead in the creation of sustainable business ventures,” said LSBE Dean Amy B. Hietapelto.

“In today’s competitive and ever-changing global marketplace, we are very pleased to expand our wealth of offerings to include the Entrepreneurship Minor to all business students who seek to capitalize on their entrepreneurial potential, regardless of their major,” Hietapelto added.

“Our Entrepreneurship Major was launched last fall and we are already at capacity for the class of incoming juniors. Given the widespread interest students have related to starting a business at some point in their careers, the Entrepreneurship Minor is the perfect complement to any major in LSBE,” said Jennifer Mencl, Management Studies Department Chair.

Numerous programmatic components, such as a mentoring program, business plan competitions, field trips to entrepreneurs' companies, entrepreneurship internships, and many other extracurricular elements, will be integrated into the entrepreneurship student experience, as well.

Students wishing to declare an Entrepreneurship Minor can stop by the Advising and Academic Services office at LSBE 111 or complete the online “Add/Change of Major or Minor Form” form at https://lsbe.d.umn.edu/advising/forms.php.

LSBE is accredited by the AACSB International (Association to Advance Collegiate Schools of Business). Less than 5% of business schools worldwide have earned this prestigious distinction. In Northeastern Minnesota, LSBE is the only school to have attained AACSB accreditation. Its website is lsbe.d.umn.edu.
