UMD Police Department to Hold Swearing-In and Promotion Ceremony

DULUTH, MN – The University of Minnesota Duluth (UMD) will host a swearing-in and promotion ceremony for officers of the UMD Police Department on Wed., July 1, from 3–4 pm in Griggs Center, 1120 Kirby Drive on the UMD campus. The public is invited.

UMD Police Department Interim Director Sean Huls will swear in Officer Andrew Gronli and Officer Samantha Roseth. Sergeant Mike Brostrom will be officially promoted to the rank of sergeant.

Sergeant Mike Brostrom was born in Duluth, graduating from Central High School in 2001. He completed his law enforcement skills training at Fond du Lac Tribal and Community College and recently earned his bachelor’s degree in criminal justice from Thomas Edison State College. He previously served as a deputy sheriff with the Cook County (Minn.) sheriff’s office.

Mike joined the UMD Police Department in September 2004 and has served in a wide variety of roles, including field training officer, defensive tactics instructor, and active threat response training. He also serves as an adjunct instructor at Fond du Lac Tribal and Community College, teaching prospective police officers emergency driving and survival skills.

Officer Andrew Gronli is a native of the New London-Spicer, Minn., area, and graduated from high school there in 2010. He attended St. Cloud State University, graduating with a degree in criminal justice. Andy previously worked as a public safety officer at St. Cloud State and in security services at a variety of venues.

Officer Samantha Roseth was born in Duluth, graduating from East High School in 2008 and from UMD in 2012, majoring in criminology and sociology and minoring in psychology. She also graduated from the Law Enforcement skills program at Fond du Lac Tribal and Community College in 2014. Sam worked previously for the City of Duluth as a park ranger, parking monitor, and as a sergeant in the Duluth Police Reserves. She is also currently a member of the Minnesota Air National Guard, serving as an avionics technician with Duluth’s 148th Fighter Wing.

A reception will be held following the ceremony.
