Professor Earns Fulbright Scholarship to Teach in Hong Kong

Scott Laderman

Scott Laderman

(Duluth, MN) – Dr. Scott Laderman, Associate Professor of history in the College of Liberal Arts, has earned a Fulbright Scholarship. Laderman will use the scholarship to teach at the University of Hong Kong for 10 months.

“I am delighted and honored to have been given this opportunity,” Laderman says. “Much of my research and teaching addresses how Americans have historically engaged with the rest of the world. To be able to venture out into that world while teaching about the United States is a great privilege.”

Scott Laderman joined the Department of History in 2005. A specialist in the modern United States, his work broadly explores the various ways that Americans have encountered and ascribed meaning to the rest of the world. Professor Laderman teaches courses in nineteenth and twentieth century U.S. history for the department, focusing especially on the global United States and the politics of popular culture. In addition to numerous articles, Laderman is the author of Tours of Vietnam: War, Travel Guides, and Memory (Duke University Press, 2009) and Empire in Waves: A Political History of Surfing (University of California Press, 2014), and he is the co-editor of Four Decades On: Vietnam, the United States, and the Legacies of the Second Indochina War (Duke University Press, 2013).

The Fulbright Scholarship Program, founded in 1946, is a competitive source of funding for college faculty across the country interested in international, educational exchange.
