University of Minnesota Medical School Duluth Campus: Dean Paula Termuhlen, M.D. to Present Boman Cancer Research Symposium

DULUTH, MN – Paula Termuhlen, M.D., dean of the University of Minnesota Medical School Duluth Campus, will give the address at the Annette L Boman Cancer Research Symposium on Tuesday, May 5, 2015 at 7 pm at Northland Country Club, 3901 E Superior Street, Duluth, Minn. The title of her presentation is “Molecules to Miracles: The Importance of Cancer Research.” This event is free and open to the public.

A graduate of the St. Louis University School of Medicine, Termuhlen completed her surgical training at the University of Texas Health Science Center in Houston. She then completed a surgical oncology fellowship at M.D. Anderson Cancer Center before joining the faculty at the University of Nebraska. She has also served on the faculty at the Wright State University Boonshoft School of Medicine in Ohio, where she eventually became medical director of the High-Risk Breast Center.

At the Medical College of Wisconsin, Termuhlen served as professor of surgery and director of the Surgery Residency Program. She was also medical director of the High Risk Breast Cancer Program and physician champion for Clinical Informatics for Surgical Services.

She holds numerous regional and national leadership positions including serving on the National Board of Medical Examiners and on the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME) Residency Review Committee.

Termuhlen comes to the University of Minnesota from the Medical College of Wisconsin, where she led the Community Medical Education Program, working to establish regional campuses to help address workforce issues in smaller, rural communities in Wisconsin.

About the Annette L Boman Cancer Research Symposium

Annette Boman, a gifted medical researcher at the University of Minnesota Medical School—Duluth Campus, a wife and mother of two young children, died as a result of complications from cancer in 2003. She graduated summa cum laude with a degree in physics from Gustavus Adolphus College, St. Peter, Minn. She earned a Ph.D. in biophysics from Johns Hopkins University and was a postdoctoral fellow at the National Cancer Institutes of Health and at Emory University.

After many other awards and opportunities, Annette married fellow doctoral student, Peter Kebbekus, and they moved to Duluth in 1998. She was an assistant professor in the Department of Biochemistry, Molecular Biology and Biophysics and received more than $900,000 in research grants, including one from the American Cancer Society. The Fellowship and Symposium are sponsored by Annette’s family, including her parents, Dr. Tom and Mary Boman.

The mission of the University of Minnesota Medical School, Duluth Campus is to be a leader in educating physicians dedicated to family medicine to serve the health care needs of rural Minnesota and American Indian communities, and to discover and disseminate knowledge through research.
