UMD Public Lecture In Honor of Darwin Day

DULUTH, MN — On Friday, February 13 at 3:15 p.m. the public is invited to attend a Charles Darwin Day event hosted by the University of Minnesota Duluth (UMD) Biology Department and Earth & Environmental Science Department. To honor this seminal scientist, a visiting professor from the University of Minnesota Twin Cities Dr. Mark Borrello will demonstrate Darwin’s continued impact on contemporary biology. The event is free and will take place at UMD’s Life Science building, Room 185.

Borrello refers to himself as a “historian of biology” and focuses his work on evolutionary theory, genetics, behavior and the environment. According to Borrello, Darwin’s natural selection theories continue to open up new avenues for research across many fields. In addition to teaching, Borrello has led a study abroad course in the jungles of Panama and is the author of “Evolutionary Restraints: The Contentious History of Group Selection” released in 2010. The title of his upcoming lecture is “Levels of Selection and Evolving Individuals: Darwin's Contributions to Contemporary Biology.”

For further information about Mark Borrello’s seminar, or to request disability accommodations, including interpreters, contact Kathy Steward with the Biology Department at biology@d.umn.edu or 218-726-6262.
