A Stellar 2013 Fall Sports Season for UMD Intercollegiate Athletics

DULUTH, MN – University of Minnesota Duluth’s Department of Intercollegiate Athletics had some amazing accomplishments throughout the 2013 fall sports season.

UMD's 407 student-athletes compiled a 3.10 grade point average. Of those, 114 achieved a 3.50 GPA or above and 16 earned a perfect 4.00, during the 2013 fall semester. All-American honors were bestowed on nine Bulldog student athletes this fall -- four volleyball, three football and one women's cross country.

A total of 45 UMD student-athletes qualified for a spot on Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference All-Academic Team for the 2013–14 fall sport season. Junior offensive lineman Andrew Pattock was a CoSIDA Academic All-American first team selection while junior soccer forward Maureen Stormont was named an NSCAA Scholar All-American.

For the first time ever, UMD hosted three different NCAA II playoff events -- football, volleyball and soccer. All three of those teams were ousted by the eventual national champion. The Bulldogs also qualified for the NCAA II Cross Country Championships after winning its first-ever NCAA II Central Regional title.

In the final national poll for their respective sports, the Bulldogs were ranked fourth in volleyball (AVCA), seventh in soccer (NSCAA), seventh in women's cross country (USTFCCCA) and eighth in football (AFCA).

UMD placed fifth in the fall 2013-14 National Association of Collegiate Directors of Athletics (NACDA)/Learfield Sports Directors' Cup standings. This represented the school's third highest showing ever, bettered only by a second-place finish in 2009-10 and a No. 4 placing one year earlier. Bolstered by a team championship in women's cross country and runnerup finishes in both football and volleyball, UMD also ended the fall season occupying the No. 1 spot in the Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference /US Bank All-Sports Standings following the fall season.

Soccer equaled a program record for victories with 17 and advanced to the quarterfinal round of the NCAA II tournament for the first time.

Volleyball went 33-3 overall, captured the Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference Tournament championship, and made its 12th straight NCAA II playoff appearance. The Bulldogs, whose season came to and end in the NCAA II Central Region title game, produced the American Volleyball Coaches Association Division II National Player of the Year in senior outside hitter Kate Lange.

Football closed out the year with an 11-2 overall record and reigned as the NSIC North Division champions for a sixth straight season. The Bulldogs also earned a sixth consecutive NCAA II playoff berth.

Curt Wiese capped off his first season of head coaching duty with the football Bulldogs by receiving the prestigious Liberty Mutual Coach of the Year Award for Division II. He became the second Bulldog in four years to be so honored.

And even though it isn’t technically a fall sport, the Bulldog men’s hockey team posted a pair over a pair of Top 2 nationally-ranked clubs in the opening half of its 2013-14 season, defeating No. 1 Minnesota 6-2 on Nov. 24 and No. 2 Notre Dame on Oct. 25.
