UMD'S Annual Big Jig Ice Fishing Event Relocating to Island Lake in 2015

Duluth, MN —The University of Minnesota Duluth's Subway Big Jig Ice Fishing Tournament returns for its 15th year in 2015, but for the first time it will be held on Island Lake north of Duluth. The event is scheduled for Feb. 8 from 12 pm to 3 pm and is limited to the first 3,000 entrants.

Subway has served as the Big Jig title sponsor since its debut in 2000. All proceeds, which have averaged approximately $50,000 annually, go to support the UMD athletic scholarship fund.

Besides a new venue, the 2015 Big Jig will feature several other new initiatives such a youth contest/prize board (for kids 12 and under), and a VIP Heated Fishing Tent. This year's prizes will be handed out to the anglers with the top 25 fish in both contests including $5,000 cash in the adult division.  In addition, each adult entrant's name will be placed in a raffle for a $500 cash prize.
UMD athletic staff underwent a detailed process to ensure the future success of the Big Jig by surveying and talking to participants.

"We listened to those anglers who have a strong passion for the Big Jig and their feedback was paramount for us moving the contest," said UMD assistant athletic director and Big Jig director Jay Faherty. "One thing that won't change is that this will continue to be staffed almost exclusively by volunteer Bulldog coaches and student-athletes. It's been a great community outreach tool for us over the years."
Registration for the 2015 Big Jig is $35/adult, $5/youth and $99/VIP Tent and can be done on-line at www.umdbulldogs.com/bigjig or by calling 218-726-6287.
