Tweed Museum of Art

DULUTH, MN — The University of Minnesota Duluth’s Tweed Museum of Art received the 2014 Best of the Lake Award for best gallery/museum in Minnesota from Lake Superior Magazine.

1,200 readers voted this year from around the region and across the United States and Canada and cast their votes on a range of favorite things to do.

Lake Superior Magazine has been granting the Best of the Lake awards annually since 1979 for different categories. The survey was included in the April/May issue of the magazine and in the Lake Superior Travel Guide. It was also communicated via social media, press releases and announcements, by mail and online. The magazine announced the winners on August 1, 2014.

About the Tweed

With a permanent collection of over 8,000 art objects representing a range of cultures and periods of art history, the Tweed Museum of Art is a major cultural and educational resource for the Upper Midwest. It’s mission is to serve as an art collecting and teaching institution that promotes learning through collection stewardship, research, and by presenting programs in the visual arts for the engagement of the University and surrounding communities.

In the 1920s and early 1930s, George P. Tweed and his wife Alice began collecting 19th and early 20th century European and American painting, including examples of the French Barbizon School and Impressionist influenced American Landscape painting. After the death of Mr. Tweed in 1946, Mrs. Tweed saw the potential of the Tweed Collection as an educational resource for the community and the University. She generously developed the funding for the present building which was dedicated in 1958.
