DULUTH, MN — In fall 2014, University of Minnesota Duluth’s Department of Psychology, which is part of the College of Education and Human Service Professions, will offer a new Master of Arts in Psychological Science (MAPS). This degree will prepare students for successful careers in organizational, educational, clinical, and counseling settings by training them with research-based knowledge and skills.

A MAPS open house will be held on Fri., Oct. 18 from 1:15 to 2 pm in Bohannon Hall 351. Professors will be available to answer questions about the program.

The MAPS degree offers three different emphases: Clinical-Counseling Psychology, Industrial-Organizational Psychology, and General-Experimental Psychology.

Clinical-Counseling Psychology prepares students for careers as mental health practitioners by training them in diagnostics and intervention methods. This emphasis also provides required coursework and the necessary skills for graduates to be eligible for a Professional Clinical-Counselors license through the Minnesota Board of Behavioral Health and Therapy.

The Industrial-Organizational Psychology track prepares students to work in organizational settings as personnel and human resource professionals.

General-Experimental Psychology supplies students with the knowledge for various careers including: instructors at community colleges, faculty at four-year institutions, and research specialists. This track also provides training and preparation for students in doctoral-level programs.

“The U.S. Department of Labor projects a positive employment outlook for individuals with advanced degrees in psychology. This is because of the increased demand for psychological services in schools, hospitals, substance abuse treatment clinics, consulting firms, etc.," said Alexandra Luong, associate professor and director of graduate studies for MAPS. “Our master's program provides training that will prepare students for jobs in these areas.”

MAPS applicants are required to complete an online application and provide transcripts from a completed bachelor’s degree, GRE scores (quantitative and verbal), TOEFL scores (if applicable), three letters of recommendation, a personal statement, and a work sample. The deadline for the admission application is March 1, 2014 for students to begin in fall 2014.
