UMD Offers Majors Combining Marketing and Graphic Design

DULUTH, MN – The University of Minnesota Duluth (UMD) has just launched two majors that answer a single critical need—preparing students to create effective marketing campaigns built on business and design principles.

The two majors, the Bachelor of Business Administration in Marketing and Graphic Design and the Bachelor of Fine Arts in Graphic Design and Marketing, are offered on a collaborative basis between the UMD Labovitz School of Business and Economics and the UMD School of Fine Arts. The University of Minnesota Board of Regents approved the degree programs on May 9, 2013.

There is a strong industry need for graduates who can provide a wide range of competences. Many organizations are looking for entry-level graduates who are trained in traditional marketing management as well as applied graphic design skills.

The degrees will enable graduates to work effectively in industry-standard creative teams, moving from empirically identifying and measuring consumer needs and desires to the design of effective promotional graphic systems and materials.

The curriculum comprises of courses in several diverse areas including visual literacy, business fundamentals, graphic design, business communication, and marketing management.

Graduates will be expected to enter the marketplace knowing how to work with a creative team to research, design and implement effective marketing strategies, solve visual communication problems to develop market offerings that satisfy consumer needs, and communicate effectively with target markets.

The deadline to apply for Fall 2013 is May 28, 2013 at 12 noon. Applications are currently being accepted. Contact sfa@d.umn.edu or lsbe@d.umn.edu.
