Third Annual Champ Day of Service Supports the Community

DULUTH, MN On May 4, the Office of Civic Engagement held its third annual CHAMP Day of Service. It was an opportunity for over a hundred UMD students, faculty, staff, and alumni to participate in volunteer projects throughout the area and give back to Duluth community organizations. The 130 volunteers contributed 360 service hours to 13 service projects.

The core message behind the outreach is an emphasis on community service. "Giving and giving back to our community enriches everyone's lives," said Chancellor Lendley C. Black. "The spirit of service is evident at UMD. The Office of Civic Engagement mobilizes about 2,000 students a year who contribute over 30,000 volunteer hours. The depth and extent of UMD's commitment is an inspiration."

CHAMP Day of Service projects included:

Painting a community center
Collecting donations for a food shelf
Flood homes clean-up
Youth adventure activities.
Cleaning litter from neighborhoods and public spaces
Clearing and maintaining nature trails

"In spite of the wet weather, it was an enjoyable day," said Erin Zoellick, Community Engagement Specialist in UMD's Office of Civic Engagement. "Non-profit organizations in Duluth appreciate the support. UMD volunteers make a significant difference."

CHAMP Day of Service gets its name from the UMD Bulldog mascot and the phrase CHAMP Connecting Hopes with Action to Mobilize People. It began in March 2011 as part of Chancellor Black's request for a Day of Service during his Inauguration Week activities.
