Third Annual CHAMP Day of Service

DULUTH, MN – A rally will be held on Saturday, April 13, in UMD's Ward Wells Field House from 9–10 am, to kick off the third CHAMP (Connecting Hopes with Action to Mobilize People) Day of Service. Chancellor Black will make opening remarks. At 10 am, volunteers will board buses to go to CHAMP Day of Service destinations around the Greater Duluth Area.

Also that morning, the Pie in the Face "winner" will receive their pie (in the face). This was a fundraiser led by the UMD group SERVE (Students Engaged in Rewarding Volunteer Experiences). Students made a donation then voted for the faculty member or UMD administrator who should receive a pie in the face. A portion of the proceeds will go to Circles of Hope, a Duluth charitable organization serving those with a breast cancer diagnosis who are in poverty or financial distress.

CHAMP Day of Service provides an opportunity for UMD students, staff, and faculty to give back to the Duluth community by working on a number of site-based projects with local organizations.

Last year, UMD mobilized 328 volunteers, engaging in 1048 hours of service in a single day. CHAMP Day of Service began in 2011 with UMD Chancellor Black's commitment to use his inauguration to provide a greater good. UMD's Office of Civic Engagement plans and coordinates this event each year.
