UMD to Host Lecture on Hawaiian Politics and the U.S. Government
February 24
5 p.m.

UMD will host a lecture by Professor J. Kehaulani Kauanui, Associate Professor of American Studies and Anthropology of Wesleyan University Connecticut on February 24 at 5 p.m. in the UMD Library Rotunda with a reception to follow. The public is cordially invited to attend.

Professor Kauanui will present a critical analysis of the legal case of "Office of Hawaiian Affairs, et al v. State of Hawaii". According to Professor Kauanui, the lecture will focus on the politics of the case, the U.S. government, the theft of the lands, and how the court ruling serves to underwrite continuous land dispossession, as well as the suppression of the Hawaiian Kingdom.

Professor Kauanui co-founded the Native American and Indigenous Studies Association (NAISA) and serves as an inaugural council member. She produces and hosts a public affairs radio show "Indigenous Politics: From Native New England and Beyond". She is the author of several books.

This event is made possible with support from the Chancellor's Diversity Initiative, and the Department of American Indian Studies.
