BreatheFree UMD Week Activities
Set for March 22 – 26

UMD will celebrate BreatheFree UMD week March 22 – 26 with a variety of events and activities including games, prizes, snacks, recreation and informational materials including programs for help with quitting smoking.

And also on Wednesday, March 24 is National Kick Butt Day!

The week’s activities are a celebration of commitment to a healthy, smoke-free environment on the UMD campus. The events were organized by the UMD Campus Advisory Committee, the UMD Office of Academic Support and Student Life, and the UMD Student Health Advisory Committee (SHAC) in cooperation with the American Lung Association.

BreatheFree

During BreatheFree UMD week student, staff and faculty volunteers will be sought to help spread the word about UMD's smoke-free policy, and to help post the breathefree poster in high-traffic areas.

A workshop will be provided to train volunteers on how to approach violators and what resources are available for smokers to quit.

Supporters will receive BreatheFree badges and other resources to help spread the word.

A special nosmoke@d.umn.edu email has been set up to provide a contact for volunteers who want to be involved and for information about the workshops.

Also the email can be of help by keeping UMD volunteers informed of campus locations that are frequented by violators. Anyone can email nosmoke@d.umn.edu with times and locations. It is a confidential email address.

UMD is committed to providing a safe, clean and healthy environment for its students, staff and faculty. Considering the wealth of research documenting health risks of smoking, and with strong recommendation of the Student Health Advisory Committee (SHAC), UMD adopted a smoke-free policy in 2007, and amended the policy in 2008.

In December 2009, a task force was appointed to make recommendations for improving compliance with the policy, and a Smoke-Free Committee was established to implement recommendations. The committee is charged with sustaining educational efforts with the intent of changing the social norm around smoking.
