University of Minnesota Duluth Chancellor Kathryn A. Martin presents the Sieur du Luth Fall Lecture and Symposium focused on Campus Architecture, on Thursday September 18, 2:30-6:30 p.m. in the Weber Music Hall, on the UMD campus.

The event is free and the public is cordially invited.

Dean Thomas Fisher, College of Design, University of Minnesota, Twin Cities will serve as moderator for the event.

Five noted architects, each with a stake in the growth of the University of Minnesota Duluth campus, will give presentations. Architect Cesar Pelli from Pelli Clarke Pelli Architects, New Haven, Conn. (UMD Weber Music Hall) will deliver the opening address.

In the second event, Pelli will be joined in a panel presentation by:

  • Carol Ross Barney, Ross Barney Architects, Chicago, IL. (architect for UMD Swenson College of Science and Engineering)
  • Tom Oslund, Oslund and Associates, Minneapolis, Minn. (UMD landscape design)
  • Ralph Johnson, Perkins + Will, Chicago, IL. (architect for UMD Labovitz School of Business and Economics)
  • Ken Johnson, SJA Architects, Duluth, Minn. (architect for UMD Library and local architecture support)

Following the questions and answers, faculty from the UMD School of Fine Arts, Labovitz School of Business and Economics, and Swenson College of Science and Engineering will respond to the importance and impact of these new buildings to the teaching, learning, and research of the respective faculty.

The symposium will conclude with a presentation on Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) Certification and Sustainability. The presentation will be given by Tom Oslund (see above) and John Rashid (Associate Director of UMD Facilities Management and a LEED certificate architect) who will review the LEED certification process as it impacts campus architecture and design.

The bringing together of the architects of these stunning new buildings on the UMD campus that have dramatically changed the landscape of the University of Minnesota Duluth will be instructive and informational.

This symposium provides an opportunity to examine the concept of changing the appearance of the campus through campus planning and the placement and design of new buildings--as well as the impact of aspiring to LEED certification (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design).
