UMD To Host Presentation on Autism Spectrum Disorder
November 11

The University of Minnesota Duluth (UMD) will host a lecture on Autism Spectrum disorder, entitled "Gifted & Challenged: The College Experience for Students on the Autism Spectrum," presented by nationally known speaker and Disability Specialist Lisa King, on November 11, at 7 p.m. in the Kirby Student Center Ballroom.

The event is free and the public is cordially invited.

The 7 p.m. lecture is a feature presentation of an afternoon workshop on Asperger Syndrome, entitled "Working with College Students with Asperger Syndrome," held at 1-3 p.m. in the UMD Library Rotunda (fourth floor.)

Asperger Syndrome (AS) is an Autism Spectrum Disorder with growing numbers of students on college campuses. Students with Asperger Syndrome present unique challenges to campus professionals.

The workshop will:

  • Define Asperger Syndrome
  • Look at the increase in incidence
  • Examine how students are affected on campus and in class
  • Discuss accommodation issues

The events are sponsored by UMD Access for All (AFA) and UMD Disability Resources. UMD Access for All is a student organization dedicated to promoting disability awareness on campus and around the community. UMD Disability Resources offers students with disabilities a variety of services and accommodations to insure that both facilities and programs are accessible.
