UMD Announces Faculty/Staff Award Recipients for 2006-2007


University of Minnesota Duluth Awards

UMD Chancellor's Distinguished Research Award

Faculty members who receive this award are honored for their excellence in research, scholarly contributions to their field and for their dedication to student research in education.

- Randall Gordon, Professor, Psychology
Randall Gordon's education includes a B.A. in Sociology (Honors) from York University, an M.S. in Counseling Psychology from Nova University, an M.A. in Social Psychology from the University of Houston and a Ph.D. in Social Psychology from the University of Houston. At UMD, Professor Gordon's teaching and research interests are in social and industrial/organizational psychology. He also teaches the research methods core sequence in psychology. His articles have appeared in such journals as the Journal of Personality and Social Psychology, Personality and Social Psychology Bulletin, Organizational Behavior and Human Decision Processes, Journal of Applied Social Psychology, Basic and Applied Social Psychology, Teaching of Psychology and Professional Psychology: Research and Practice. Professor Gordon has authored over 30 articles that have been published in academic journals and over 60 papers presented at psychology conferences. Nearly 100 undergraduate students have appeared as co-authors on his published articles and presentations.

Professor Gordon currently serves as an Executive Editor for the Journal of Social Psychology and has just finished a six-year term as Executive Editor at the Journal of Psychology: Interdisciplinary and Applied, returning to his role as a review board member for that journal. He also reviews for a variety of social and industrial/organizational psychology journals on a regular basis. Professor Gordon's research programs have spanned a relatively wide variety of topics: attitude-behavior consistency models, archiving research productivity in psychology, and, currently, research on optimism. The majority of his work has focused on the related issues of prejudice, stereotyping, and discriminatory behavior.

Jean G. Blehart Distinguished Teaching Award

This honor is given each year to a faculty member who has made contributions to the teaching mission of UMD that are of extraordinary quality.

- Carmen Latterell, Associate Professor, Math & Statistics
Carmen M. Latterell holds a B.A. in mathematics from the College of St. Scholastica, an M.S. in mathematics from UMD, and a Ph.D. in mathematics education from the University of Iowa. She is the author of over twenty research articles and two books. Her first book, entitled "Math Wars", describes the ongoing debate about how to teach mathematics at the K-12 level. Her second book is entitled "How to Prepare for College Mathematics Placement Tests." Professor Latterell is the Principal Investigator on a five-year, $3,000,000 National Science Foundation Graduate Fellows in K-12 Education grant. Her main area of research concerns the improvement of mathematics education at all levels.

Albert Tezla Teacher/Scholar Award

This award is given annually to a faculty member in the UMD College of Liberal Arts or the School of Fine Arts who has an exceptional and effective teaching style that emphasizes the worth of research in a learned discipline and the maturing impact scholarly activity has on the development of human attitudes and values.

- James Klueg, Professor, Art & Design
James Klueg is professor and ceramics area head in the UMD Department of Art and Design, where he has taught since 1986. He received his M.F.A. from Indiana State University. Professor Klueg's ceramics have been exhibited in over 200 solo and group exhibitions since the late 1970s and are in museum, corporate and private collections. His work has appeared in Ceramics Monthly and American Craft magazines, and the following books: "The Ceramic Surface", "The Ceramics Design Book", "Handbuilt Ceramics" and "Low-Fire Surfaces". UMD Outstanding Faculty Adviser Awards

The Outstanding Faculty Adviser Award is given each year to UMD faculty members who have demonstrated outstanding service to their students.

University of Minnesota System Awards:

Horace T. Morse-University of Minnesota Alumni Association Awards for Outstanding Contributions to Undergraduate Education

This honor is awarded to exceptional candidates nominated by collegiate units in their quest to identify excellence in undergraduate education.

- Praveen Aggarwal, Associate Professor, Marketing
Praveen Aggarwal teaches undergraduate and graduate Marketing courses in the UMD Labovitz School of Business and Economics. Professor Aggarwal received his Ph.D. in Marketing from Syracuse University and has been teaching at UMD since 1998. He has Masters Degrees in both Economics and Rural Management. He has several years of experience as a senior executive in the food products industry. Professor Aggarwal's research interests are in the areas of consumer decision-making processes, decision delegation, and price and non-price promotions. He has close to a hundred publications and presentations to his credit.

Professor Aggarwal is a past recipient of the Jean G. Blehart Distinguished Teaching Award, Hormel Meritorious Teaching Award, UMD Outstanding Faculty Adviser Award, SOCC Outstanding Professor Award, and Beta Gamma Sigma Professor of the Year Award.

John Tate Award for Excellence in Undergraduate Advising

This award serves to recognize and reward high-quality academic advising and the contribution it makes in helping students formulate and achieve intellectual, career, and personal goals.

- Julie Westlund, Director, Career Services
Julie Westlund has served as the Director of UMD's Career Services since 1988. She provides individual and group career counseling to hundreds of students and alumni each year. In addition, to support student career planning, she has successfully promoted the incorporation of career planning into a wide variety of academic courses; developed a variety of special events such as job fairs; developed and taught a career course; and developed career modules for the University of Minnesota e-Portfolio.
