UMD Announces Faculty Award Recipients for 2004-2005

University of Minnesota System Award:

Horace T. Morse-University of Minnesota Alumni Association Awards for Outstanding Contributions to Undergraduate Education

This honor is awarded to exceptional candidates nominated by collegiate units in their quest to identify excellence in undergraduate education.

Jon Pierce, Professor, Management Studies
Jon Pierce's teaching and research interests are in organizational behavior and management. He teaches Leadership and Organization Behavior. His articles have appeared in such journals as the Academy of Management Journal, Academy of Management Review, Organizational Behavior and Human Decision Processes, Journal of Management, Journal of Organizational Behavior, and Personnel Psychology. He is the co-author of seven books--The Manager's Bookshelf: A Mosaic of Contemporary Views (now in its 7th edition), Alternative Work Schedules, Management, Windows into Organization, Leaders and the Leadership Process (now in its 4th edition), Managing, Management, and Management and Organization Behavior: An Integrative Perspective. In addition, Pierce has authored over 70 papers that have been published in academic journals and presented at organization and management conferences.

He has served on the Editorial Review Board for the Academy of Management Journal and the Journal of Management, the Board of Directors for the Midwest Business Administration Association, and currently reviews for several leading organization management journals. He was recently inducted into the Academy of Management Journals Hall of Fame. Along with Randall B. Dunham (University of Wisconsin-Madison) he received the YODER-HENEMAN Personnel Research Award from the American Society for Personnel Administration. His research has been funded by the U.S. Department of Labor, the Blandin Foundation, the Society for Human Resource Management; the Universities of California-Berkley, Wisconsin-Madison, and Minnesota, the U.S. Office of Employment and Training Administration, and the Office of Naval Research. He was a visiting scholar in the Department of Psychology at the University of Wikato in New Zealand. Pierce's research includes organizational determinants and organization-based self-esteem, psychological ownership within the organizational context, employee ownership, job design and technology, and alternative work scheduling.

University of Minnesota Duluth Awards:

Jean G. Blehart Distinguished Teaching Award

This honor is given each year to a faculty member who has made contributions to the teaching mission of UMD that are of extraordinary quality.

Paul Cannan, Associate Professor, English
Dr. Cannan received his PhD from the Pennsylvania State University in 1997. He enjoys teaching courses in Shakespeare, Milton, seventeenth- and eighteenth-century drama, the history of authorship, and Australian and New Zealand literature. He is the author of The Emergence of Dramatic Criticism in England: From Jonson to Pope (Palgrave, forthcoming). In 2002, he was awarded a University of Minnesota McKnight Land-Grant Professorship. He is currently completing a book on the publication history of Shakespeare's poems.

Chancellor's Distinguished Research Award

This honor is given each semester to recognize the research contributions of a UMD faculty member and to provide opportunities to present developing research to a broad UMD audience.

Jon Pierce, Professor, Management Studies
Jon Pierce, Professor of Management Studies in the Labovitz School of Business and Economics, is this years' recipient of the Chancellor's Distinguished Research Award. Professor Pierce was also this year's recipient of the Horace T. Morse award.

Outstanding Faculty Adviser Awards

The Outstanding Faculty Adviser Award is given each year to faculty members who have demonstrated outstanding service to their students.

Albert Tezla Teacher/Scholar Award

This award is given annually to a faculty member in the College of Liberal Arts or the School of Fine Arts who has an exceptional and effective teaching style that emphasizes the worth of research in a learned discipline and the maturing impact scholarly activity has on the development of human attitudes and values.

Janice Kmetz, Associate Professor, Art and Design
Janice Kmetz is an associate professor and Graphic Design Area Coordinator in the Department of Art and Design. She has a BS and MA Degrees in Visual Communication from the University of Minnesota Twin Cities and completed her doctoral course work in 1996.

Professor Kmetz continues a 29 year award winning regional, national and international career in the design profession. Her activities include project designer for the 3M Company, Metropolitan Council, City of Minneapolis Planning Department. Her client list includes major international corporations including Ford, Mazda, Suzuki, Mitsubishi - locally, Tweed Museum, Lake superior Brewing, Auto Trim Design. Janice developed the first computer generated imaging for automotive graphics and has upwards of 700 thousand vehicles produced with her designs. Additionally Janice has a 20 year history as a regionally exhibiting fine artist.

Before coming to UMD Janice taught for 10 years at University of Minnesota Twin Cities and Bemidji State University. During her 11 years at UMD, Janice has taught 20 different courses including Graphic Design at both graduate and undergraduate levels, Graphic Design History and Fine Art. She has been very active in advising, supervising internships, graduate students and multiple UROP projects. Students and faculty alike consider Professor Kmetz a master teacher and scholar who is committed to the mentoring of her students.
