"Welcome to the Global Village, Baby:
Global Infectious Disease and You"

February 10
7:30 p.m.

Speaker is Dr. Lucia Barker from the Department of Medical Microbiology and Immunology

The School of Medicine, Duluth will hold another in its series of "Doc Talks" lectures. Dr. Lucia Barker, Assistant Professor in the Department of Medical Microbiology and Immunology at the School of Medicine, Duluth will present "Welcome to the Global Village, Baby: Global Infectious Disease and You" on February 10 at 7:30 p.m. in room 142 of the School of Medicine, Duluth.

If you think diseases like AIDS, TB, Ebola, malaria, and influenza are "over there", think again. The world is getting smaller and the problems of the developing world are, or will soon be, the problems of everyone on this planet. A CIA task force reported in 1999 that: "Emerging and reemerging infectious diseases, many of which are likely to continue to originate overseas, will continue to kill at least 170,000 Americans annually. Many more could perish in an epidemic of influenza or a yet-known disease or if there is a substantial decline in the effectiveness of available HIV/AIDS drugs."

Dr. Barker will speak about the importance of using compassion and information in a pro-active approach to infectious disease control that can protect Americans and other citizens of the world.

The event is free and the public is cordially invited.

"Doc Talks" are held the second Tuesday of every month (September-April) at 7:30 p.m. in room 142 of the School of Medicine, Duluth.
