UMD Department of Education
Marks 50 Years of National Accreditation
for Teacher Preparation

The University of Minnesota Duluth (UMD) Department of Education is one of 283 institutions recognized by the National Council for Accreditation of Teacher Education (NCATE) having achieved 50 years as an accredited institution for teacher preparation.

The NCATE is the teaching profession's accrediting body- a mechanism to ensure high quality teacher preparation. Institutions that have gained NCATE accreditation have met national standards in areas such as design of curriculum, assessment of candidate performance, faculty qualifications, supervision of clinical experiences, and adequate and up-to-date resources. The NCATE accreditation process establishes rigorous standards for teacher education programs and holds accredited institutions accountable for meeting these standards.

The NCATE is the largest coalition of education and public organizations in the nation devoted to quality teaching, and one of the longest-standing national coalitions of stakeholders in the education community.

The UMD Department of Education offers degree programs in early childhood studies; elementary, middle school, secondary, and K-12 education; and a post-baccalaureate special education program. All degree programs lead to Minnesota teacher licensure. The Department of Education is located in the UMD College of Education and Human Service Professions.

The mission of the UMD Department of Education is to prepare teachers, provide a wide range of in-service and graduate programs for school personnel and educators in non school settings, and provide expertise in instructional methodology and technology. The department also engages in a variety of research and development activities related to teaching and learning and contributes to the liberal education program.
