UMD Bulldogs to be Honored at White House Ceremony

WASHINGTON- The University of Minnesota Duluth (UMD) women's hockey team will be honored by President George W. Bush at a White House ceremony on June 25, 2001, Congressman Jim Oberstar announced today. The UMD Bulldogs won the inaugural NCAA Division I Women's Ice Hockey Championship on March 25, 2001.

"Coach Shannon Miller and the assistant coaches are to be congratulated for putting together a team that won the NCAA Division I national championship. The young women on the hockey team have done a tremendous job both as students and as athletes, and they have performed above and beyond anyone's expectations-except their own. They played like champions all year long," said Kathryn A. Martin, Chancellor of UMD. "We are very proud of the honor they have brought to UMD and to the State of Minnesota. They certainly deserve to go to the White House to be recognized as other NCAA Division I teams have been, and we are grateful to Congressman Oberstar for arranging the invitation."

Congressman Oberstar, along with senators Paul Wellstone and Mark Dayton, successfully lobbied the White House to honor UMD women's hockey team for its outstanding achievement.

"The players, coaches and UMD community should be very proud of the team's magnificent achievement in only its second season as a member of the Western Collegiate Hockey Association. I am very pleased that the White House has decided to honor the reigning national champions of the small but growing sport of women's hockey," congressman Oberstar said. "Winning the inaugural women's ice hockey championship is a remarkable feat, and I am delighted that the players and coaches will receive the national recognition they so richly deserve."

The Bulldogs won the national championship by defeating St. Lawrence University by a score of 4-2 in the NCAA tournament held in Minneapolis. The 25-member team will be accompanied to the White House by Chancellor Martin, Bulldogs coach Shannon Miller, assistant coaches Stacy Wilson and Shauna Davidson, UMD Vice Chancellor Gregory Fox, and UMD Athletic Director Robert Corran.
