UMD Women's Hockey Team Leaves Sunday for the White House
NCAA Division I Champions To Be Honored by President Bush


The University of Minnesota Duluth (UMD) women's hockey team, along with Chancellor Kathryn A. Martin and UMD officials, is set to leave the Duluth International Airport for Washington D.C. on Sunday, June 24 at 5:45 a.m.. In Washington they will be honored by President George W. Bush at a White House ceremony in the East Room on Monday, June 25 at 4:45 p.m. (eastern standard time). The Minnesota Delegation, which includes all Minnesota House members and Senators, has been invited to the ceremony.

During the ceremony, Chancellor Martin will present President Bush with a UMD Bulldog goalie glove and hockey puck. The UMD Bulldogs won the inaugural NCAA Division I Women's Ice Hockey Championship on March 25, 2001.

Congressman James Oberstar along with the Minnesota State Society will host a luncheon for the group on Monday at 1:15 p.m. in an historic Capitol Building dining room.

Chancellor Martin said, "We are proud of the honor that our student athletes and coaches have brought to UMD and to the state of Minnesota. And we are very pleased to have them so honored in our nation's capitol."

University of Minnesota President Mark Yudof congratulated the UMD team saying, "As president of the U of M system, I am pleased that UMD has won the NCAA national championship, and that the University of Minnesota has been a leader in fostering the development and growth of women's ice hockey at the national level with two Division I teams."

Members of the group traveling to Washington include the 18-member UMD hockey team, Chancellor Martin, Bulldog coach Shannon Miller, assistant coaches Stacy Wilson and Shauna Davidson, UMD Vice Chancellor Gregory Fox, and UMD Athletic Director Robert Corran. Travel for the group was provided by Northwest Airlines.
