UMD Holds Annual Engineering/Industry Banquet

$55,000 in Scholarships and Awards Presented

Over $55,000 in scholarships and awards were presented September 26 at the annual University of Minnesota Duluth (UMD) Engineering/Industry Banquet. Fifty-eight scholarship checks were awarded to students in Industrial Engineering, Electrical & Computer Engineering, and Chemical Engineering. Scholarship funds are contributed each year by businesses and individuals. A committee comprised of UMD and industry representatives helps raise the funds.

Dr. James P. Riehl, Dean of the College of Science and Engineering (CSE), stated, "I have been so impressed with the level of industry and community support for engineering at UMD since I arrived here a few months ago. These scholarships are an example of the strong interest and support that is found in our region."

The annual UMD College of Science and Engineering Recognition Award was presented to Jerry M. Fryberger, President of Hallett Dock Company in Duluth. The award is given each year for "outstanding contributions that bring excellence and distinction to the engineering programs at UMD." Dean Riehl said, "Jerry has been on the Engineering Scholarship Committee for years. He is a strong asset to UMD, and to the entire community."

UMD also presented three industry awards. The awards are given for "substantial contributions and ongoing support of the engineering programs at UMD." The three companies honored were:
- Barr Engineering Company, Minneapolis, Minnesota
- C. G. Bretting Manufacturing Company, Inc., Ashland, Wisconsin
- Schott Foundation, Wayzata, Minnesota

Keynote speaker for the event was Scottie Holms, CEO of Northern Solutions, Inc., a computer consulting firm in Rush City, Minnesota. Mr. Holms talked to students about the importance of goal setting.

The banquet was dedicated to UMD College of Science and Engineering former Dean Sabra S. Anderson. After serving as dean for ten years, Dr. Anderson stepped down. She took a position as director of the UMD Study in England Program for 2000-2001. Next year she will return to the Department of Mathematics as a professor. Dr. Anderson was praised as "an administrator of vision, a diplomat of the first order, and a tireless worker for the advancement of engineering programs at UMD."
