UMD Facilities Management Achieves Perfect Two-Year Safety Record

UMD Facilities Management Department has achieved a perfect two-year record of no lost-time work injuries, it was announced today by John King, department director. Facilities Management operates and maintains all facilities on the 240 acre UMD campus--which contains over 50 buildings and 2 1/2 million square feet.

The department has 153 full-time equivalent employee positions which include workers in the areas of: mechanical, electrical, heating, ventilation, painting, carpentry, construction, plumbing, custodial, grounds maintenance, and fleet vehicle maintenance.

"At UMD, safety is first." said King. "We maintain a high quality fundamental safety program, but ultimately it is the safety awareness of each individual worker that makes the big difference."

UMD holds monthly safety meetings with each of its nine work units, provides appropriate safety equipment, and conducts on-going safety training on topics ranging from the mixing of chemicals to the avoidance of back injuries.

All Facilities Management employees will be honored at a noon luncheon (in the UMD Kirby Student Center, Ballroom B, 3rd floor), and a 5 p.m. dinner (in the UMD Griggs Center, Kirby Student Center, 2nd floor) on April 15. Two employee recognition events are being held at different times to accommodate the shift schedules of all employees.
