Strings Area

2012 Strings student Nicole Jordan, a Philadelphia native, joined the Atlanta Symphony Orchestra as Assistant Principal Librarian in October of 2011. She holds a Bachelor of Music from the University of Minnesota-Duluth in Viola Performance as well as a Master of Music in Music History from Temple University where she completed her thesis. Composition Area

2011 Composition student Kathleen Meyer was named 1st prize co-winner of the 2010-11 Young Composers Competition sponsored by the Duluth Superior Symphony Orchestra.

2010 Black Hills State University appoints Symeon Waseen, who graduated from the UMD Music Department with degrees in both music theory/composition and piano performance, as Assistant Professor of Music where he will be instructing students in both of his areas of expertise.

2007 Composition student Andy Reilly was named first prize winner of the 2007-08 Young Composers Competition sponsored by the Duluth Superior Symphony Orchestra.

2005 Composition students Nick Mroczek and Eric Hagmann were named the first and third prize winners of the 2004-05 Young Composers Competition sponsored by the Duluth Superior Symphony Orchestra.

2003 Composition student James Gould was named second prize winner of the 2003 Young Composers Competition sponsored by the Duluth Superior Symphony Orchestra.

2002 Composition students Ryan Rapsys and Christopher Thomas Fahey were named the first and second prize winners of the 2002 Young Composers Competition sponsored by the Duluth Superior Symphony Orchestra.

Vocal Area

2010 Vocal student Nathan Herfindahl, who graduated with both a BM and MM in vocal performance from UMD, has gone on to has receive awards from the Metropolitan Opera National Council. Nathan has sung with the Metropolitan Opera, National Symphony Orchestra, the Detroit Symphony Orchestra, and the Duluth Superior Symphony Orchestra.
