Staff Diversity Training

The Office of Cultural Diversity staff provides a variety of diversity training programs and workshops.

Students of Color Panels

The Office of Cultural Diversity offers panel presentations presented by students of color volunteers. These panels are meant to be informative, educational, and thought provoking. They are presented to promote cultural awareness and strive to end racism here on campus also to encourage dialogue among students. The panelists strive to bring an increasing awareness to students by sharing personal experiences. Each panelist will answer only the questions which they are comfortable. Every question respectfully asked will be respectfully answered. Our main goal is to bring awareness that racism still exists on this campus; and overturn any negative stereotypes that still exist. For more information, please contact Susana Pelayo-Woodward at 726-8444.

Ambassadors Program

The Ambassadors Program is a volunteering opportunity for the students inside the Multicultural Center to mentor, inspire and encourage high school students to go to college. Our volunteers dedicate 4 to 5 hours on selected days, touring high school students around UMD, participating in social activities and also participating in panel discussions. During the panel discussions, the high school students are able to hear the experiences of students that they can relate with. The high school students ask our ambassadors variety of questions regarding homework load, roommate issues, GPA requirements for admission and also the experience of students of color in a predominately white college campus.

Multicultural Excellence Program

The mission of the Multicultural Excellence Program (MEP) is to provide guidance and support to promote the academic success of students culminating in the acquisition of a college degree. Participants of the MEP program consist of students who graduate from a Saint Paul Public High School, meeting the requirements and attending a MEP college. MEP colleges review their awards annually and therefore are subject to change. The University of Minnesota reaffirms its support of and commitment to the Multicultural Excellence Program. Saint Paul Public School MEP students who graduate in good standing, and who meet the University admission requirements will receive award packages that cover their tuition, books and fees. UMD North Star STEM

The North Star STEM Alliance is a partnership of 16 Minnesota colleges and universities and two community organizations. Our goal is to double the number of African-American, Hispanic/Latino, and Native American graduates in science, technology, engineering and math (STEM). We are part of the Louis Stokes Alliances for Minority Participation, a program of the national Science Foundation. Please visit www.northstarstem.org for more information or visit the Multicultural Center to pick up brochures.
