Services for Distance Education Students

Distance learners are eligible to have library materials shipped to them. The library pays for outgoing shipping; you are responsible for the cost of return shipping.

You can also get help with research.

To qualify for Distance Education Services, you must:

Using the Service

First, complete our Distance Education Patron Registration form to sign up for distance education services. A Circulation staff member will confirm your eligibility via email. When filling out the form, provide a street address for shipping (we cannot ship to P.O. boxes), and include your UMD email address.

Next, check the library catalog to determine whether the materials you need are owned by a University of Minnesota system library. If not, request the items through interlibrary loan.

Requesting Materials from a University of Minnesota Library

Search the library catalog (MNCAT Discovery Duluth) for the item you need.

Complete a Distance Education Request form.

You can expect to receive requested materials within 5 to 7 business days. Shipped materials are subject to all library borrowing policies.

Requesting Materials from Non-University of Minnesota Libraries

Complete an interlibrary loan request. When filling out the form, choose "UMD Distance Learner" under Status.

You will be required to authenticate with your Internet ID and password.
