Library Display Space Request
The display cases in the Kathryn A. Martin Library are available to campus and nonpartisan, nonprofit organizations at the discretion of the Library Director and the Library Communication & Events Team. You can see our current displays here.
Requests will be considered based on the following guidelines:
- Preference will be given to library-related displays and themes.
- Preference will be given to organizations that provide services or programs to a campus-wide audience rather than to a single academic department.
- Preference will be given to displays that enhance the campus environment for diverse populations.
To allow for use by multiple organizations on campus and to encourage a variety of themes, the library limits each group to one reservation per calendar year. Library-sponsored displays may be placed as often as needed.
Step 1: Fill out and submit the library display request form below.
You will be asked to indicate whether you prefer an interior display case or the library concourse display space near the entrance to the Labovitz School of Business and Economics. If you request an interior case, you are expected to use both sides of one case.
Library displays change monthly, so plan to use the space for the entire month. Be ready for installation on the first day of the month and plan to remove items on the last day of the month (unless we ask you to extend your display time by another month).
Step 2: Gather materials for your display.
If you include items from the library’s collections, stop at the Circulation desk and ask that these items be checked out to the “UMD Library display case” location. Do not check them out to your own account. Be aware that patrons are permitted to check out circulating library items on display.
Step 3: Request the display case key at the Circulation desk.
The key will open any of the three library display cases. You may wish to make use of book stands and sign holders available for use in displays. We also have step stools to help you reach high areas.
Step 4: Install your display.
Be sure to include signage that lets viewers know the theme of your presentation. Use other artifacts, items, or a colorful cloth on the bottom of the display case to add interest.
Ask for assistance if you wish to reposition the glass shelving in the concourse display. We do not move shelves in the interior display cases.
Step 5: At the end of the month, confirm the time when you will be removing your display.
We like to dust the display shelves before the next display is installed. If you used any tape to affix signs, please remove it when you dismantle your display.
