The work by Erasmus The Praise of Folly was published in 1511 in Paris. During his lifetime, some forty editions appeared from various publishers, including one issued by Johann Froben in Basle in 1515. It was this edition which Hans Holbein the younger saw and which he ornamented with his own drawings in the margin. This facsimile of that copy was made in 1931 in Basle by Henning Oppermann and only 750 copies were made. On exhibit is copy No. 42.
