Case Four

Gustave Doré (1832-1882) was one of the most prolific and successful book illustrators of the late 19th century. He engraved illustrations for many literary works, such as Dante's Inferno, Rabelais' Gargantua, and the works of Tennyson and Milton. He also illustrated a large folio edition of the Bible in 1866. Reproductions of these Bible engravings appeared over and over again in many of the popular editions of the Bible published thereafter.
