Resources at the UMD Archives
The University of Minnesota was founded by an act of the Minnesota Legislature in 1851. Today it has a total student enrollment of nearly 69,000 on five coordinate campuses. This institution of higher learning has had a proud history of educational innovation, research and service to the State of Minnesota. Duluth State Teachers College (DSTC), established in 1902, was transformed into the University of Minnesota Duluth (UMD) on July 1, 1947 as an enactment of the Minnesota Legislature. Sources of information about the University, including its history and traditions, can be found in the UMD Archives at the locations listed below. Items designated with a location such as "PRINT 03/06/06" are located in the UMD Archives, housed in the Library Annex. ADDITIONAL INFORMATION ABOUT THE UMD ARCHIVES
The UMD Archives is located in Library Annex 202, and shares facilities with the Northeast Minnesota Historical Center. Archival materials in this room, as a rule, are not listed in the library catalog. Special indexes in the Archives must be consulted to discover specific holdings. A variety of information about the University (especially UMD) is kept in this area, including college yearbooks, catalogs, class schedules, Board of Regents Minutes, University Senate Minutes, newsletters, scrapbooks, faculty and student publications, photographs, as well as non-current university office files, diaries, manuscripts, architectural drawings and other primary research materials. All archival items are non-circulating. The Archivist is also able to direct researchers to appropriate offices within the University for information not present in the Archives. Some archival collections have restricted access, and special permission may be required to consult them. See Patricia Maus, UMD Archivist, for details. Call for an appointment at (218) 726-8526.
