ITSS's Samba server (sometimes called the windir server) allows you to create personal file storage space on your central system account and access your personal web space. Files you store here are backed up nightly. While there is no fee to create your personal directory, there is a charge for files stored here (see Rates and Fees for details).
Note: Samba does not allow file names containing many common punctuation marks such as * { } = < > & / ? " ; You may have to rename some of your files if you have problems copying them to your SAMBA directories..
You must be on the UMD network to connect to the Samba MyFiles or MyWeb. If you are off-campus, you can use Samba as follows:

You can also connect to your personal web storage area using Samba. This allow you to transfer and work with your html files and web graphics directly from you rcomputer without having to use an FTP program. The URL for accessing these files would be http://www.d.umn.edu/~yourusername.
To do this, follow the same instructions as above but instead of smb://samba/myfiles/ use smb://samba/myweb/.
