A message from the IonE Executive Director, Dr. Jessica Hellmann:

"With its strengths in both sustainability and community engagement, University of Minnesota Duluth is – and has been – a natural fit for IonE, a campus where our institute’s establishment of IonE@UMD. It is truly a fertile place to expand our capacity to facilitate world-changing work and partnerships. Within the university, among values and goals truly come alive. I am thrilled to be more formally recognizing this affinity, beginning this year, with the campuses, and with communities." 

Julie EttersonA message from the IonE@UMD Campus Lead, Dr. Julie Etterson:

"Regardless of your position at UMD, there is a place for you in IonE@UMD! As our programs develop on the UMD campus, there will be opportunities for engagement for faculty and staff, graduate and undergraduate students. IonE@UMD will accomplish the IonE mission in three primary ways: 

  • Cultivate and support interdisciplinary research for faculty, graduate, and undergraduate students with a special emphasis on community-driven questions
  • Provide training to faculty and students to develop leaders with skills to tackle the complex problems of the future
  • Foster partnerships between UMD and the community including the business, government, media, and nonprofit sectors
