Buying Books

Textbooks for all courses can be purchased at UMD Stores, first floor Kirby Student Center. UMD Stores also carries reference books, dictionaries, study aids and supplies. You can purchase or reserve textbooks online at UMD Stores. Go to UMD OneStop Student Services then click on "Enrollment Summary" under the quick links on the right. In your summary, click on the "textbook" icon in the bottom corner. This automatically imports all your class information, making it quick and easy. If you order online early, the books your ordered will be packaged and ready for you to pick up the weekend before classes begin.

Reservations for fall semester will begin in early August. Books are available for sale four to six weeks before the start of the semester. Some students wait to buy their books until after attending the first day of class; other students buy their textbooks before the semester begins so they have everything they need during the busy first week of class. Textbooks are stocked according to department (Art, History, etc.). Each class has a course card listing the class, section number, and the required and optional books for that particular section. Bring your class schedule and check your section number before selecting your books.

Cost

Plan to spend around $600 each semester for books and supplies. Used books cost 25% less than new books. New, used, digital and rental books are available for purchase from UMD Stores.  When available, used and digital versions are priced much less than new books. Textbook rental is offered on hundreds of titles each semester, and can save up to 50% of the purchase price. You must be registered for the course and have no holds on your student financial account to be eligible to rent.

Returns

Receipts are required for all returned books. Please see UMD Stores, or visit their website for the current semester's return policy.  After the return deadline, returns will only be accepted with proof of course cancellation. The phone number for the bookstore is 218-726-7286.

Other Bookstores

Other bookstores can be used to purchase textbooks and course materials.  When you shop at UMD Stores, you will find helpful staff that can answer your questions. You will always receive the correct version or edition of the materials.  Plus, you can charge your purchase to a major credit card, or to your student account with your U-Card.  They also offer textbook buyback at the end of each semester, offering cash for your books.
