Student Health Advisory Committee

The Student Health Advisory Committee is a group of dedicated students who act as a student voice to UMD Health Services and school administration.

Members meet weekly for one hour to discuss current issues and brainstorm solutions. SHAC members are given the opportunity to volunteer additional time on special projects throughout the year.

SHAC Mission

LISTEN to student health care needs.

EVALUATE Health Services policy.

PROMOTE public health at UMD.

IMPROVE health care at UMD.

SHAC Responsibilities

  • Recommend new programs/policies or modify existing programs/policies
  • Conduct periodic student needs assessments
  • Work closely with Health Services staff to help resolve complaints including those left in the Suggestion Box located in the lobby of Health Services
  • Hold campus-wide forums at least once per semester to get feedback about current issues

Past Projects

Supporting a proposal for a Wellness Living and Learning Floor in the residence halls.

Water access in residence halls. SHAC, along with NetImpact, and several departments across campus, worked to increase drinking water access in the dorms through grant funding for gooseneck water faucets specific to filling water bottles.

A Campus Food Survey and various presentations and proposals for easier access to nutritious foods on campus.

Food and Nutrition Workshop Series.

Vending Project, pilot project for fresh foods in select vending machines.

Health Services marketing and promotional support.

BreatheFree UMD
SHAC proposed and had since supported the smoke-free policy on campus. For more information on the policy, visit the Breathefree webpage at:


SHAC members (2013), Sam Knuth and Judy Breuer, wrote a grant to bring water bottle filling stations

to the housing units on campus for easier water access.
