Acute Care Visits

UMD WellCare visits are conducted by a Registered Nurse (RN) working under a scope of practice which includes the ability to triage, assess and treat only minor, acute medical concerns.  Examples of conditions that may be addressed are listed below. If your medical concern falls outside this scope of practice, you will be referred to your own medical provider or another medical facility such as an Urgent Care or Emergency Department.

For medical emergencies, call 911.

  • Please note:    If you were seen by a medical provider within the last three weeks, and your condition is not better, or if you have a chronic (ongoing) condition that needs medical attention, please make an appointment with your primary healthcare provider.

Acute care visits are available to UMD faculty and staff, their spouses, and dependent children aged 12 and older, covered by UPlan insurance.  Faculty and staff who are not UPlan participants can still receive services at UMD WellCare, but will need to pay the full cost of care, and then submit the bill to their own insurance company.  Please bring your U Card, insurance card, and potential $15.00 co-pay (cash or check only) to walk-in visits.  See cost information below to learn more.

Making an appointment for a nurse visit to address minor, acute illnesses is highly encouraged to ensure that adequate time is available to address your concern and to limit wait times; open Monday through Thursday (typically closed on Fridays).  Walk-in hours will continue to be available at this time; please see below.  Visits are conducted on a first-come, first-served basis; those with appointments will be given priority.  Call (218) 726-8666 or email to make an appointment or to check on services.

Cost for acute care visits:

UMD WellCare is an in-network provider for all UPlan insurance options.  A referral is not needed. If you are a UPlan member, your co-payment is based on your insurance plan, but is typically $15 (must be paid in cash or check).  Those that are not UPlan members will be billed for the cost of the visit.  There is no co-payment for immunizations, biometric screenings or quick checks (examples, blood pressure, pulse, temperature).
