With help from UMD's College of Liberal Arts, Kristina Borich
has gone from her roots in Pine City, Minn., to the very heart of the
fabled Inca Empire of Peru and back.

Although some students have a pretty good idea what they
want to major in when they enroll in college, Borich did not. As
a freshman, she thought about becoming a teacher, but wasn't
sure. Then as a sophomore, she took an introduction to cultural
anthropology. After a short time in class, "I knew that was it," she
said. In addition to majoring in anthropology, she is also minoring in Spanish and in communication.

This past summer, she was able to put her anthropology and
Spanish language study into practice. Through a UMD Study Abroad
Fair, she secured an internship in Peru with the Pro-World Service
Corporation. There she traveled to Urubamba, a mountainous country
outside Cuzco, assisting families in areas of widespread poverty
with the installation of clean-burning ceramic stoves in their humble
dwellings.

Good grades and enthusiasm for her areas of study have been
rewarded with two scholarships. This year, Borich received the
CLA Board of Advisors Scholarship, which gives her $5,000. This
scholarship is available to a full-time student with at least a 3.2
grade point average and letters of recommendation from two faculty
members. She is the first recipient of the CLA Board of Advisors
Scholarship. Last year, she received a Potter/Lloyd Family Reaching
Higher Scholarship.

Now, as a junior, Borich has her sights on graduating and entering
a field that she loves as much as her trip to Peru. She looks forward to
opportunities for growth well beyond her freshman expectations.
